Navigating Loss and Finding Light in the Holiday Season

December 19, 2023

The holiday season, typically a time of joy and togetherness, can be challenging for those navigating grief. We spoke with Kim Markin, MSW, who’s a wellness navigator at Modern Minds.

“We understand that loss can cast a shadow over celebrations,” Markin said.

Here are a few insights from Markin to guide you through this season, embracing the reality of your emotions and finding your unique way to honor the memory of your loved ones.

Acknowledging the Reality: The pain of loss can feel more pronounced during the holidays. It’s OK to feel the void, the longing and the sadness. “Your emotions are a testament to the deep connections you’ve shared. Give yourself the space to grieve without judgment,” Markin said.

Honoring Through Mindfulness: “Consider weaving mindfulness into your holiday journey,” Markin said. Mindfulness involves being present with your thoughts and emotions. It won’t erase the pain, but it creates a compassionate space for you to honor your feelings and find moments of solace, she said.

Discovering Meaning in Values: Reflect on the values you and your loved ones cherished. How can you honor and continue these values during the holidays? Aligning your celebrations with these meaningful principles can infuse your season with purpose, Markin said.

Creating New Traditions: “Embrace the idea of creating new traditions that include rituals or activities honoring your loved one’s memory,” Markin said. This could be a powerful way to integrate their presence into your celebrations.

Embracing Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Grief is a unique journey, and self-compassion is essential. “Allow moments of joy without guilt and practice self-care. It’s not about erasing the pain but gently nurturing yourself through it,” Markin said.

Seeking Connection and Support: The holiday season is a time for connection. “Surround yourself with supportive friends and family. Joining a grief support group at this time could also lead to meaningful connections,” encouraged Markin. Sharing your feelings and memories can be a healing experience. Remember, vulnerability is a strength.

Navigating loss during the holidays is a personal journey. May this season be one of remembrance, connection, and gentle self-compassion. If you find yourself struggling, know that support is available.
